How to adapt a work such as IN PARENTHESIS for musical performance? Composer Iain Bell reveals the ideas behind the opera.

 

IN PARENTHESISthe poem, depicts two different worlds: a real world where the battles of World War I are fought, and a mysterious ‘other world’ in the woods of Mametz. 

For composer Iain Bell, it was vital not only to know the libretto but to completely understand the tonalities and colours of David Jones’s original poetry before starting to compose the opera.

During the read-through, Bell explains his ideas for ‘Rise of the Moon’, protagonist John Balls major aria, to director David Pountney and the team of Wales National Opera.
