IN PARENTHESIS confronts the cruel reality of the Battle of the Somme and the supernatural visions of Mametz woods. . Robert Innes Jones explains the set design.

 

Robert Innes Jones, set designer of the Welsh National Opera world premiere, explains his design concept of a stage set somewhere between sacral architecture, battle arena and the dark of the woods.

In order to better understand IN PARENTHESIS, the poem by David Jones, Director David Pountney was eager to get to know the original sites of the Battle of the Somme – and, with them, the Mametz woods.
