Assisted by Emma Jones, Librettist and Associate Director, David Pountney and the rest of his team discover Robert Innes Hopkins’s set, which evokes the oppression of the World War I trenches. The fundamental challenge, as for every director, says Pountney, is to ‘work out how the space works in the time that the music allows’.
