Kulllervo: Interview with the FNO's Artistic Director Lilli Paasikivi

Finnish National Opera | Mezzo-soprano Lilli Paasikivi on Kullervo

Lilli Paasikivi, artistic director of the Finnish National Opera, values KULLERVO for its vocal versatility. The mezzo-soprano sees Sibelius’s work as a blend of opera and ballet.

If only Jean Sibelius had been bold enough to tackle big operas, says Lilli Paasikivi, the mezzo-soprano and artistic director of the Finnish National Opera. Paasikivi sees the symphonic poem KULLERVO, which is being interpreted here afresh, as a blend of opera and ballet. Jean Sibelius produced a piece with a broad vocal repertoire, she says. What a shame he never tried again!
