Komische Oper | ‘A young woman prepared to be in love’ – Asmik Grigorian on ONEGIN’s Tatyana

Tatyana Larina is the character to whom Tchaikovsky felt most connected in his opera YEVGENIY ONEGIN. Asmik Grigorian sings the role at Komische Oper Berlin. In an interview she explains her interpretation.

When Yevgeniy Onegin enters the stage, Tatyana Larina instantly falls in love with the dashing and slightly arrogant young man. She would have fallen for any young man, says soprano Asmik Grigorian, as she is a ‘young woman prepared to be in love’.

Asmik Grigorian sings the role that was very special to its composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, in the new production of Komische Oper Berlin, staged by its artistic director Barrie Kosky.

The tragedy of Tatyana’s first love is that Onegin turns out to be quite different to how she has imagined.
