Günter Papendell sings the title role in YEVGENIY ONEGIN, recently staged by Barrie Kosky. How does he interpret the libertine and his relationship to the young Tatyana?

Even if Yevgeniy Onegin is the title character of Tchaikovsky’s opera of the same name, the main character remains the young Tatyana Larina. Of this Günter Papendell is certain. The baritone plays Onegin in Barrie Kosky’s new production of YEVGENIY ONEGIN at Komische Oper Berlin.

The charming man gets to know Tatyana on her family’s estate and flirts with her sister. Later on, Onegin begs Tatyana to help and to love him, but she chooses her marriage over the memories of her early love. Tatyana is the turning point in Onegin’s life.
