Kullervo: Interview with conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste

Finnish National Opera | Jukka-Pekka Saraste on conducting Kullervo

Conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste and choreographer Tero Saarinen have launched an unusual experiment: the visualisation of a symphonic poem. Together they have added new levels of meaning to KULLERVO by performing it as a dance.

It is not his first encounter with KULLERVO: Jukka-Pekka Saraste once worked on this symphonic poem by Jean Sibelius with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. But when he conducted the orchestra at the Finnish National Opera in 2015, the production had become a dance. This close collaboration with choreographer Tero Saarinen and two dance ensembles teases out new levels of meaning.
