Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells marked its 10th year with the UK premiere of Šimon Voseček’s opera, BIEDERMANN AND THE ARSONISTS.
Based on Max Frisch’s classic absurdist play, it is an engrossing tale of human cowardice and liberal guilt. Director Max Hoehn, winner of the 2015 Independent Opera Director’s Fellowship, emphasised the grotesquerie and menace inherent in the score, juxtaposing the well-ordered domestic world of the Biedermanns with the stylised chaos of the arsonists. A distinguished and committed cast, including Mark Le Brocq (Biedermann) and Leigh Melrose (Schmitz), hurled themselves into their roles in David Pountney’s English translation, accompanied by the Britten Sinfonia under conductor Tim Redmond.
