Choreographer Ashley Page, director Jonathan Kent and a company of dancers present Glyndebourne's first ever production of HIPPOLYTE AND ARICIE, premiered in 2013. They explain how they have integrated the ballet into each of the five acts of Rameau's masterpiece of French Baroque opera.
In the prologue, Diana, chaste goddess of the moon and the hunt, and Cupid, god of love, argue over who will dominate. Their quarrel is settled by Jupiter, who decrees that love will rule over all hearts for one day every year.
Dance and music are combined more than ever in Rameau's opera and that is brilliantly brought to life by Paul Brown's colourful and elegant designs and Ashley Page's playful choreography.
