Kasper Holten presents his approach to staging THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, which he hopes will speak directly to modern audiences and still remain true to the essence of Wagner’s masterpiece.
THE FLYING DUTCHMAN is about a man who is cursed to roam the oceans. That feeling of ‘being at sea’, drowning on the excesses of modern life, is one that Holten feels will resonate with audiences today. He has chosen to set the production in the world of international contemporary art because, as Holten explains, he sees parallels between the Dutchman and Wagner himself who also roamed the world trying to find expression for his soul through these great works.
