Den Norske Opera & Ballett

The Norwegian National Opera is Norway's only professional opera ensemble. The company currently comprises 19 soloists, 4 apprentice places, the Norwegian National Opera Chorus and the Norwegian National Opera Children's Chorus, which have 53 and 70 members respectively. Each season, the Norwegian National Opera also engages a variety of national and international guest soloists. The Norwegian National Opera Orchestra consists of 101 musicians and is managed until summer 2015 by John Helmer Fiore. Together they present a wide repertoire ranging from Baroque opera to premieres of new works.

Den Norske Opera & Ballett

The company was founded in 1959 with Kirsten Flagstad as its first Director. In 2008 it moved into the new Opera House, consisting of three stages, advanced stage machinery and excellent acoustics.
Per Boye Hansen took over as Artistic Director in spring 2012, presenting his first repertoire in the 2013/14 season. He has focused on modern classics and new works, while also overseeing an aesthetic renewal of the classical repertoire by introducing several new directors. In January 2015 Calixto Bieito became the company's first guest director.
