A landmark production by David Pountney for Lyon’s Puccini celebration of the operas, which make up his contrasted triptych – Il Trittico. Here the comic and musical masterpiece, GIANNI SCHICCHI, in its entirety.
The rich Buoso Donati has just died and the members of his family are hoping to lay their hands on his fortune. But his will cannot be found. The ingenious Gianni Schicchi then discovers it, but their disappointment is immense, because everything has been left to a religious order. Once again, they apply to Schicchi, who suggests passing himself off as the dying Donati – whose death has not yet been announced – and deceiving first his doctor, then his lawyer.
Given the fact that he could be condemned by divine and human justice for doing such a thing, Schicchi warns his accomplices not to say a word! Thus it is, after dictating a genuine apocryphal will, which names him, and not the greedy family, as the sole heir, all he has to do is chase away the wretches from what has now become, thanks to his trickery, his home.
