THE OPERA PLATFORM visits Australia for a concert performance of Bellini’s LA SONNAMBULA by Victorian Opera at the Arts Centre Melbourne. Conducted by Richard Mills, the cast features outstanding singers including Jessica Pratt, Paolo Pecchioli and Carlos E. Bárcenas.
After the triumphant première at Teatro Carcano in Milan in March 1831, Bellini wrote: ‘Here you have the happy news of the uproarious success of my opera last night at the Carcano. I will say nothing about the music, for you will read of that in the press. I can only assure you that Rubini and Pasta [singers] are two angels who enraptured the entire audience to the point of madness.’ LA SONNAMBULA retains its emotive appeal, with its ceaseless lyricism, its long-breathed melodies, its phenomenal coloratura, its inwardness and melancholy.
Glittering star soprano Jessica Pratt plays the main role in the concert performance of Vincenzo Bellini’s beloved bel canto opera, recorded in May 2017. The plot involves sleepwalking, misplaced suspicions of infidelity, rampant jealousy, a disguised aristocrat and more. Amina and Elvino are in love and will soon get married. Only Lisa, once engaged to Elvino and who is pursued by Alessio, is disappointed by the engagement. On the eve of her wedding, Amina sleepwalks into the bedroom of another man. Upon discovering her mistaken infidelity, her fiancé Elvino cancels their wedding before Amina’s innocence is revealed in a joyous happy ending.
